Finally, there is a slight chill in the air. It only took 2 months but its finally starting to feel like it’s football season. The timing is perfect because there are some great match-ups this weekend. So here are the games that I will be looking into when I am not watching the new season of Stranger Things.
Virginia vs Pittsburgh
When it comes to UVA and going to bowl games, it’s been more trick and less treat in the last few years. They haven’t been in a bowl game since 2011. The Cavaliers will be looking to becoming bowl eligible with a win against Pittsburgh. To me, the strongest chance of getting that win will be this week. The next 4 games after that... their chances diminish significantly. It will be a hard fought game, but I do feel UVA will come out on top.
#14 NC State vs #9 Notre Dame
Last week, Notre Dame had a big win against USC. That win put them back into the national conversation and even garnered them a few college playoff whispers. NC State is having an excellent season in their own right. They are looking to stay in the running for the ACC Atlantic Division. They have surprised many with they 6-1 record so far. Though Notre Dame is favored, I do feel NC State could pull off the upset today. Last year's game was played in a monsoon, so anything could happen.
#4 TCU vs #25 Iowa State
Iowa State pulled off the huge upset against Oklahoma earlier this season. Makes you wonder, could they do it again against TCU? Well, my answer is no. Which is really unfortunate because Iowa State finally broke it into the Top 25.
Duke vs #13 Virginia Tech
Call me pessimist but I am still waiting for the Hokies to have the “Bad Loss.” It happens pretty much every season. Don’t get my wrong, I love my Hokies and I pray that it never happens. It usually happens after a big win, a blow out win or the week before a huge match up. So... basically it’s a perfect for that to happen. I know I said something similar to that last week but the feelings are still there. Hokies SHOULD get the win though.
#2 Penn State vs #6 Ohio State
This is the biggest game of the week and probably the year. This game has huge implications on which of these two teams makes it to the College Football Playoff. With the win, Penn State will control their destiny in making it into the playoff. A loss doesn’t necessarily knock them out but it does make it very difficult. If Ohio State losses they will be out. No two loss team will make it to the playoff. Ohio State is favored, but I still think Penn State wins. They are an inspired team and believe that this is their year.
So those are my picks for this weekend's college football matchups. Even if things don't go well, I can always flip back to Netflix and see how things turn out in Hawkins, Indiana for our friends from Stranger Things.
