We're all sports fans here at ROCKDEEP ROGUE RADIO. J., Meeka and I are DC sports fans in particular. As they are not writing this article, I will speak for myself going forward. I've been around long enough to see some DC Sports success. I was a young boy when the Skins brought home 2 Super Bowl trophies. I also remember the '98 Stanley Cup Finals the Capitals lost. At any rate, it has been a rough couple of decades for DC sports fans. I'm not going to rattle off all the heartbreaks and despair for 2 reasons.
- We all know the history
- I don't feel like making myself depressed
In recent years, it has gotten much worse. Why? I blame social media. It's a hub of negativity. It's always easy for people to bash their teams, complain about their luck or just be very woe-is-me about the plight of their city's sports luck.
I also blame the media. No, not in the Trump way where it's all "fake news" if I don't like it. The sports media is simply doing their job. They're reporting what they see, what their take on it is, and trying to find a story to tell. In doing so, they often help rile up the fans and make them feel even worse. They instigate the negativity and it spreads like wildfire.
If you think the players don't feel this negativity, you are sadly mistaken. They will give quotes like "we got a job to do," but think about this for a moment. If you are at your job and the other people around you are constantly talking about your potential failure and how devastating it will be, would you be more inclined to succeed? Of course not! A positive environment is contagious.
As fans tired of always being angry and depressed? We can help! Fans can make a difference! That's why we created the hashtag BelieveDC. Be above the negativity. Be above the rolled eyes if the team goes down and the comments of "here we go again." Full support! We love our city, we love our teams and we should show them that! 1 loss doesn't mean it's over! Sometimes having someone believe in you can change the whole course of things. We can be that change!
There are limits of course. I am not suggesting mindlessly following these teams and loving everything they do. Poor play should be pointed out, so should poor management and ownership. But when your team is in the heat of the playoffs and they are in a close contest and they go down, do not give up home. This is when the #BelieveDC mantra is most important. WE can be the difference. Instead of tweeting negativity, use that #BelieveDC . Believing in something even when it's not there is called faith. We can show faith in our teams. We can help our boys bring home a championship. Fans CAN make a difference. Be the difference in helping the local guys. And let's be frank: #BelieveDC feels so much better than complaining about 25 years of playoff failures and misses. Be the change. LET'S DO THIS!!!
