College football is now in full swing. Oh how I love it so. The non-conference schedules are over and as fun as it has been to see the blowouts, the real meat of the season is getting started. So week to week I will be listing games that I will be paying attention to during that current week. Now full disclosure, I am more of an ACC fan but I will try to sprinkle in big match-ups from other conferences. Even if that means I have to stomach watching some SEC games.
#14 Miami at Duke
This is a fun match up on Friday. Due to the storms this is only the Hurricane’s third game, no pun intended. So there might still be some rust even coming off the win against Toledo. This against a Duke team that under their head coach David Cutcliffe is always a tough match-up for ACC foes because he keeps his team competitive. I am going to go with Duke on this one.
#5 USC at #16 Washington State
I am intrigued by this game for two reasons. The first; I haven’t had a chance to look into USC yet and this would be a great opportunity because I am already going to be watching the Miami-Duke game. Second, the Washington State college flag has been on quite a streak of appearances on “College Gameday.” That being said, I have never seen the Cougars play a single snap of football. Sorry, WSU I hope this will make it up to you. I also hope you can win because that will help my Hokies out quite a bit if they can win their match-up. I'm taking Washington State.
Indiana at #4 Penn State
Penn State’s Saquon Barkley is my favorite for the Heisman so far in 2017. If you haven’t had a chance to watch him play, I highly recommend it. His athletic ability is off the charts. I mean, the guy has the ability to squat 525 pounds! Not too bad for a running back. I don't think this one will be close, but it will be worth watching just to see Barkley do his thing. Penn State and Saqoun Barkley will run away with this one (pun Intended).
Maryland at Minnesota
When I first saw current Minnesota Head Coach PJ Fleck and his “Row the Boat” philosophy, I thought in no way could this guy be authentic and he was a major fool. Well, after watching the ESPN special on him, I found I definitely judged the man way too soon. He just genuinely loves the game of football and getting a chance to coach. I hope he can continue his success into conference play. I think he will bring quite a big of fresh air into the program at Minnesota. I have Minnesota winning this game. Fleck is for real and his Gophers look like they're all in to the "row the boat" philosophy.
#7 Georgia at Tennessee
Tennessee Head Coach Butch Jones is definitely on the hot seat this year. After his recent press conference in which he blamed “fake news” for reporting issues in his locker room, I think the burners are on high.
I'm pick Georgia. One, because I own a bulldog. Two, because their running game and offensive linemen are really good. Seriously, with some of the holes that they can open up I might be able to run for a few first downs. Phew, I made it through a SEC game preview...
Game of the Week
#2 Clemson at #12 Virginia Tech
Justin Fuentes has got the Hokies back in the national conversation quicker than Marty McFly taking the Delorean up to 88mph. Josh Jackson has impressed many as a redshirt freshmen, leading the Hokies to a 4-0 start. That being said, this will be a very tough game for them. Even without Deshaun Watson, Clemson is still a National Championship contender. Luckily for Virginia Tech, this game is a primetime game. College Gameday will be coming to Blacksburg and the game will be played under the lights. The Hokies are known for showing up big on the national stage. A night game at Lane Stadium when 65,000 people are jumping up and down while “Enter Sandman” plays is an amazing feeling and often gives the home team an advantage. I hope it will be enough for the Hokies to pull off the upset. A win like this could put a power surge of at least 1.21 gigawatts into the Virginia Tech football program.
So that is my first College Football for Rockdeep Rogue Radio. I hope you all enjoyed it. Stay tuned for more to come as the season progresses.
