I’m seeing words like incredible, unbelievable, magical being associated with the Kansas City Chief’s comeback victory last night. And all of the credit is being given to Patrick Mahomes.
PUMP YOUR GODDAMN BRAKES!
First of all, the Chiefs trailed by 10 points very early in the 4th quarter. People are really losing their mind over a ten point comeback? Against a Broncos team that they should have dominated? Ok whatever.
Secondly, Case Keenum was the other QB. His stat line reads: 245yds, zero TD’s and 1 INT. All 12 incompletions were on him. He missed open receivers as if he was trying to sabotage his brother in laws fantasy team. Anyone that watched the game could see the frustration on the face of Broncos receivers.
Thirdly, the Broncos offensive and defensive coordinators were on cruise control.
OC Bill Musgrave has been recycled more than a can of soup and has disappointed at every stop. For some reason he forgot the young stable of RB’s he had at his disposal when it mattered most. He instead put the weight of the game on the shoulders of a QB that was given the boot by the Vikings despite the Minneapolis Miracle.
DC Joe Woods came out of the locker room feeling confident about how his defense played in the first half. Rightfully so I might add. Holding the previously potent KC offense to just 10 points. However, he neglected to make necessary adjustments to combat what KC was doing. Instead he stuck to playing man to man defense exclusively instead of mixing in some zone, especially when they had the Chiefs in 2nd or 3rd and long to go.
Lastly, Kareem Hunt scored the winning TD.
Now all of this might seem like hating. It’s not. It’s my distaste for the way Major media outlets lift young players up to the heavens with praise after some short term success only to drop them into the volcano as a sacrifice to the football Gods once they stumble. They make it a habit of “doing the most” as my kids would say, just to have a storyline. It’s like the fireman who is also an arsonist. Spark the flame, show up to put it out, get the praise. Stop it. Do better.
If Mahomes maintains through 16 games and actually helps the Chiefs win a playoff game for just the second time in the last 24 years then you can blow some smoke up his ass. Until then let’s hold the crown ceremony.
