The Redskins Draft Day party is an event I look forward to every year. It’s the first time I get to see my Redskins fam after the season has wrapped. Everyone comes together for a big tailgate in the parking lot. There’s a pig roast that people are fascinated with. Once it’s done cooking you better be around to get some of it before it’s all gone. It goes very fast! There are tables of food, drinks, and desserts. You won’t leave hungry that’s for sure. How many tailgates do you know have a band in the parking lot? Ours does! Sons of the Radio is a favorite band and fan of the team that plays in the parking lot at the tailgate each year. We love to have great entertainment. The band rocks out to cover songs by many of the 90’s greatest artists such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, and many more. It’s always a great time singing songs, dancing, and playing games. For me, going to this event this year was a little different in a good way. I had special access to FedEx Field. This was major opportunity and a dream come true since I’m a huge fan of the team. It was a big deal that I did all I could to really capture the moments. The weather was just right, the smell of fresh cut grass was in the air, and it was a great day for football activities. The ladies of Rogue Sports got to experience the Redskins Draft Fest as part of the media. Here’s a full recap of the day:
I met up with Yolanda to check in and get our wristbands for the day. At that moment i felt like we were big time. We walked along the halls of FedEx field as people greeted us. I was just waiting for someone to tell me I couldn’t go in a certain spot.. LOL We found the media room where the press conferences are held. In there, we saw camera men setting up their equipment getting ready for what was about to take place. By Saturday, the Redskins selected two draft picks in the first and second rounds. DaRon Payne (DT, Alabama) and Derrius Guice (RB, LSU) were at FedEx field ready to meet and mingle with the fans for the day.
First up was the press conference. They introduced the guys and members of the press asked them questions about their draft experience. The guys seemed very excited to be here and join a brotherhood that’s already established. Both of the guys said that players (DJ Swearinger, Trent Williams and Chris Thompson) reached out to congratulate and welcome them to the team. My hope for them is that they stay humble and get ready to put in that work. They can come in here and really make an immediate impact to help turn this team around in the right direction.
I love celebrities who are also fans of the team. I’ve been tweeting with this guy for years about the Redskins during the season. He’s also a DC native. Ladies and gentlemen, Laz Alonso. You may or may not know who he is. He’s been in several movies including Avatar, Stomp the Yard, Fast & Furious 4, to name a few. I’ve always wanted to meet him in person at a game or something so we could talk about our team. When I saw him in the room my eyes lit up. I wasn’t star struck or anything. I called his name “Laz, LAZ”. I said hello and introduced myself to him. I always introduce myself as “Mikachu” because that’s what people know me as online since it’s all of my social media handles. He gave me a nice warm smile and said “Yes of course i know who you are. It’s been a while since we’ve tweeted”. It had been a while since i tweeted him about the team, but best believe it’ll be back on this upcoming season. He’s a really down to earth guy. Hey Laz!
There were many activities on the field to make you feel like you were an NFL player. They had activities for the kids to challenge and perfect their punt, pass, and kick skills. There was a gigantic moon bounce/slide for the little ones who just wanted to jump for joy all day long. We danced to music from the sounds of DJ Christyles, Tony Redz from WPGC 95.5 was the host to hype the crowd up for the day. The cheerleaders and Redskins band also made an appearance. For the first time this year they had a beer garden out on the deck that featured a stage where some of the players did meet and greets with the fans. Former and current NFL players showed up to celebrate. I saw Mason Foster, Anthony Lanier, Morgan Moses, Chris Thompson, and Gary Clark to name a few. Overall this was a great event. Yolanda and I really enjoyed ourselves and my family enjoyed it as well. Props to the Redskins organization for putting on such a great event. It gets better and better each year. I can’t wait for next year!
